The Hitchhiker
THE PICKUP TRUCK PULLED OVER
AND STOPPED TO PICK ME UP
HURRYING, I TOOK A DRINK
OF COFFEE, A TRUCK STOP CUP
I OPENED THE DOOR, GOT IN
NODDED TO THE BIG MAN
“THANKS FOR THE LIFT”
“I’VE WALKED AS FAR AS I CAN”
“WHERE YA HEADIN,” HE ASKED
AS HE PULLED BACK ON THE ROAD
“NO WHERE IN PARTICULAR”
THE BACK SEAT MY GEAR I STOWED
SIZING HIM UP I BOLDLY ASKED
“DON’T YOU EVER GET SCARED?”
“LOTS OF CRAZIES ON THE ROAD”
“MOST ARE MENTALLY IMPAIRED”
SMILING, NODDED, HE DROVE ON
GIVING ME AN OCCASIONAL GLANCE
IN MY MIND I SUDDENLY THOUGHT
WELL, WHY NOT TAKE A CHANCE
“HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED
A SERIAL KILLER I MIGHT BE?”
“I COULD TAKE YOUR SORRY LIFE”
“DOESN’T MEAN A THING TO ME”
A DEMONIC LAUGH I THEN HEARD
I KNEW I WAS OUT OF LUCK
HE SAID, “WHAT ARE THE ODDS
TWO SERIAL KILLERS IN A TRUCK!”
