If A Monkey
If a monkey is my ancestor
And I’m supposed to have a tail
Then why don’t I have one
Nor through treetops, I prevail
If a monkey is my ancestor
Then monkey shouldn’t I speak?
Instead, I speak a human language
Something intelligent, not bleak
If a monkey is my ancestor
And into this form, I have evolved
I think there has been a mistake
The riddle of evolution’s been solved
If a monkey is my ancestor
Then is part of me chimpanzee?
A baboon or maybe an orangutan
A Rhesus monkey? Can’t be me!
If a monkey is my ancestor
Do I have a family at the zoo?
Reunions could be difficult
Communicate? I have no clue!
If a monkey is my ancestor
There’s something terribly wrong
On their family tree, I am missing
It is not there that I belong
If a monkey is my ancestor
And from one I have evolved
Why isn’t it every day happening?
And around evolution life revolves
If a monkey is my ancestor
Then, God, your Word is a lie
In your likeness, I am made
I’ve no reason to wonder or deny
If a monkey is my ancestor
Then life on Earth is a joke
The truth! It is so simple
Into existence, I was spoke!
